Classical entrance doors are designed for weather sheltered situations only,
away from driving rain or direct sunlight. They should be protected
by a substantial overhang or preferably an alcove.
Upon delivery, place your door off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated
area away from direct sunlight and extremes of temperature or humidity.
It is vital that the door is sealed promptly after delivery to prevent
moisture absorption and consequent movement. To finish your door, choose
a suitable finishing system with a high UV protection rating such as
marine quality varnish or enamel paint. Only oil systems that form
a waterproof skin on the timber may be used. Do not use dark coloured
paint or stain. Sealant manufacturer's recommendations should be sought
and their application instructions strictly followed to obtain good
results.
The
door should be thoroughly sanded with fine sandpaper (200-240 grit) to remove
any handling marks and to ease sharp edges. Apply coats of sealant
with the door laid flat, if possible, then 3-4 more coats after hanging
the door. All 6 surfaces MUST be sealed and this waterproof seal must
be maintained to minimise timber movement and prevent water staining.
Recoats may be necessary every 2--5 years depending on exposure.
